Summer is the perfect time to enjoy this walk around Old Felixstowe, devised by Cyril Francis

Coast, town and countryside might just about sum up this delightful walk. Initially the route takes you along footways and bridleways around an area of Old Felixstowe. Later on, you can fill your lungs with bracing coastal air and admire attractive views of Felixstowe Ferry and the Deben estuary. Afterwards, a mixture of cultivated fields and woodland return you to the start.

THE WALK
Start the walk by leaving the car park and turning left on to the road you just came in on. Continue to the traffic roundabout ahead and turn left to join Links Avenue. In about another 800 yards just beyond Rosemary Road, turn right on to a bridleway that takes you to Colneis Road.
Turn right here, cross the road ahead and take the footpath as indicated.
Go past Colneis School, where the path later bears left to cross Sunray Avenue. Maintain direction to reach Ferndown Road.
Turn right, cross Looe Road and take the turning into Quintons Lane.
Carry on ahead to reach the junction with the High Road. Turn left and shortly turn left again into Church Road.
Pass the White Horse pub and head towards St Peter and St Pauls parish church. Turn right beside the church on to a narrow path and soon cross St Georges Road and Western Avenue.
Where the slightly sloping tarmaced path runs between houses, take the right fork that leads to Cliff Road.
Cross the road, veer right over a grassy area and descend a flight of steps called Jacobs Ladder.
Turn left at the bottom and continue along the sea wall through an area known as The Dip. Go past The Dip Kiosk and nearby public conveniences. In front, a Martello tower soon comes into focus along with distant views of Felixstowe Ferry and Bawdsey.
Just after reaching the Felixstowe Golf course, turn left and follow the veering waymarked path across the grass to Ferry Road. Swing left here and turn right opposite the golf course car park.
Stay on the road for another half mile or so, pass a County Council field residential centre building and afterwards turn left to cross a field.
Turn left at the boundary to briefly rejoin Ferry Road and quickly turn right on to a field edge path as signposted.
Further ahead, cross into the adjoining field where a well-defined path takes you to a hedge.
Pass through a hedge gap, turn left and proceed along a cart track, Hyems Lane, to enter a playing field. Maintain direction along the fields perimeter and later enter a wooded area known as The Grove.
Continue along the woods right edge and shortly cross a marshy area by a boardwalk.
Keep bearing right through the wood to find the car park on the left.
