Cyril Francis recommends this delightful walk around the pretty villages of Stowupland and Creeting St Peter

This months walk takes you from the picturesque village of Stowupland, across the fields to Creeting St Peter and back again. Along the way you pass a number of attractive period properties including the impressive Roydon Hall, a listed Grade 2 building, said to date from the 16th century. Further ahead, take extra care when walking beside a short stretch of the A1120.

THE WALK
Leave the car park, turn right and continue along the footway. Draw level with the local URC building; turn left and cross the road to join a bridleway. Follow the gravel surface ahead, later joined by a hedge on the left. Maintain direction to the field corner, cross a bridge and enter the next field. Turn left here and follow the grassy path accompanied by the remnants of a hedge on the left.
Curve right at the boundary and in another 25 yards, turn left into the adjoining field. In front is wide open countryside surrounding the Gipping Valley. The bridleway surface may be uneven here due to holes left by horses hooves. Stay on the descending path, turn right at the bottom and continue uphill on a minor road to reach Creeting St Peter.
Turn left just past the village sign and continue along a surfaced access road. Pass a pink-washed property named St Francis and afterwards head up towards Roydon Hall. Partially obscuring the impressive Hall is a lengthy tiled barn. Go past the latter and bear left beside a pond to join a short stretch of rough track that soon becomes grassy.
Cross a stile and continue along an old earth lane, accompanied in places by a belt of trees with ivy-clad trunks. Exit the lane on to a concreted road and emerge beside a road junction at Broad Green. Turn left here as signposted to Stowmarket. Turn left when you finally reach a junction with the A1120. Continue along the narrow verge with care and cross the road where the bend straightens out.
Enter a field the finger post is partially obscured and continue ahead on a broad headland path with a hedge on the left. Carry on ahead to arrive at the bottom boundary. Turn right on to a road and follow it to a concreted hard standing. Turn left here and continue down a farm track. Turn right just before reaching Park Farm, skirt some buildings on the left and afterwards cross a grassy area, aiming for a railed fence.
Turn right, keep forward and shortly cross a bridge. Keep following the field edge path and turn left when reaching the road in front. Your point of departure is further ahead on the right.
