The vintage trend has brought an upsurge in business for Mander Auctioneers

The current trend in interiors towards matching vintage with modern for a more eclectic look means antiques are back in fashion. This is certainly in evidence at one Suffolk auction house, whose sales are busier than ever.
Mander Auctioneers can be found next to the church in Clare, this year's winner of the Village of the Year competition. Their Antiques and Interiors auctions, held every third Saturday, usually include over 600 lots of a wide variety of items, including furniture, pictures, silver, ceramics, jewellery and architectural. Customers never know what they are going to find and are often surprised that they can source an unusual piece of excellent quality at a fraction of retail prices. These are items which can be kept as an investment, passed on to future generations, or if clients are looking for a change in dcor they can sell again to raise funds for a new piece.
There is also a profit to be made for the canny collector. Gold and silver prices have increased by 30% in the last year alone and there has been a resurgence of interest in the Asian market, bringing a few pleasant surprises for clients selling lots over the year. Recently an 18th century Chinese vase, estimated at less than 200, had interest from bidders around the world and reached 1,600, while a framed Japanese embroidery, estimated at less than 100, went on to sell for 2,700. Clients seem keen to find something "different", so unusual lots always fetch higher prices, but there are still plenty of bargains to be had.
This recycling of items is not only good for the environment, but is made possible due to the robust nature of quality furniture from the Victorian, Georgian or earlier periods. Antique furniture prices had dropped well before the current recession hit so with the increasing popularity in this style of interiors, now is an excellent time to buy while prices are still relatively low. The auctioneers also accept modern items for sale, and those of good quality or with the right look, are very popular.
Mander Auctioneers hold their sales on Saturdays, and are open on Friday from 9am - 8pm for auction viewings. Contact them on 01787 277993 or browse upcoming auctions online at www.manderauctions.co.uk
