John and Kate Daulis found their perfect character home at Chillesford Lodge Estate, near Orford, a collection of homes converted from an 1876 Victorian Model Farm.
In search of a period property with land, John and Kate Daulis had a long-held desire to move to Suffolk and enjoy a quieter way of life. But leaving behind a delightful Tudor cottage overlooking a village green in Hertfordshire was no easy task, and the couple set their standards understandably high.
What they found at Pummel Tree on the Chillesford Lodge Estate near Orford, however, exceeded expectations. “It’s the perfect package,” says John, former managing director of a London marketing consultancy.
“We wanted somewhere with character. The properties at Chillesford Lodge Estate have that in abundance, with the added attraction of high quality, new build specification – so no draughts and cheaper heating bills. Surrounded by farmland, mature woodland, pasture and estuary, it’s ideal for those wanting peace and quiet – yet Orford is only a few miles away and there’s a delightful, friendly atmosphere, so it’s also perfect for young families.
“The countryside is home to deer, hares, badgers and otters, as well as all sorts of bird life. There’s even a resident barn owl that can often be spotted swooping between the buildings. Add to this a tennis court, communal garden, access to a newly built indoor swimming pool and use of a shepherd’s hut, that’s periodically moved to different parts of the estate, we couldn’t ask for more.”
Chillesford Lodge Estate is a collection of 10 homes, currently, converted from Grade II listed barns, launched following the redevelopment of an 1876 Victorian Model Farm. Inspired by the original architect, and using reclaimed materials, each unique home offers contemporary open-plan living, 21st century comforts and state of the art fixtures and fittings, including good broadband connections, superior sound and thermal insulation. The oil-fired heating system combines under floor heating in living and wet rooms and conventional radiators in bedrooms. All living rooms also have a cosy log burner and every window is double glazed.
Solid pewter hardware gives a luxurious finish to every door and window, and engineered oak flooring mirrors the wealth of exposed beams in the vaulted ceilings.
Kate, who took the opportunity to retire early from her job as a solicitor, says: “I had high hopes for our new life here. Those hopes have been exceeded. The people are lovely, welcoming and friendly. Suffolk is famed for its slower pace of life and Chillesford Lodge Estate offers that in a beautiful, priceless setting.”
Properties at Chillesford Lodge Estate are available via Savills Ipswich. Prices start from £650,000 for a three-bedroom property and £750,000 for four bedrooms. Call 01473 234 839 for more information.
