ART doesnt have to be confined to walls. Hand-crafted rugs and carpets can add just as much drama and beauty to any space, from a cobbled cottage hallway to a palatial dining room.

The Persian Carpet Studio sources and sells stunning and individually designed carpets and rugs from its Long Melford Studio, each of which is unique having been sourced from as far and wide as Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey.

As with painting movements such as surrealism and expressionism, each country and tribe has its own recognisable carpet-making style that makes it easy to identify from the use of colour and pattern, to the types of wool, cotton and silk used.

"There are some fantastic rugs from Pakistan at the moment," says Sara Barber, managing director of The Persian Carpet Studio. "They are much paler and based on the designs of Zeigler, a European textile designer who travelled in the 1880s designing carpets for Europe using traditional methods. They were less fussy and complicated and are today being reproduced in Pakistan using pale blues and creams."

There is, insists Sara, a carpet or rug to suit every home, with The Persian Carpet Studio stocking traditional, contemporary and decorative examples, as well as runners and kelims, which make fabulous wall hangings.

These stunning rugs really do add another dimension to a room. As well as being functional by bringing much-needed warmth to flooring, they are a moveable work of art. Particularly nowadays where many homes are minimal and decorated in muted natural tones, a rug or carpet can provide a welcome splash of colour and bring a room together. They are timeless heirlooms you can pass down through the family.

The carpets and rugs in the Studio represent only a fraction of what The Persian Carpet Studio can source, and with their high level of personal service and expertise, they work with clients to find them exactly what they want.

Sara added: "We know the market, we know our suppliers and were confident in what we do. We have lots of contacts in the industry."

To keep your carpet or rug in optimum condition and to preserve its value Sara recommends you should have it professionally cleaned a service that The Persian Carpet Studio provides. The Persian Carpet Studio is one of the few specialist centres in the UK with the skills to carry out restoration and conservation work. Restoration can involve anything from the securing of ends, to extensive re-weaving where a carpet has been badly damaged. Conservation methods are used to preserve antique rugs and woven textiles which are often too delicate to be restored.

Adding another string to its bow, The Persian Carpet Studio recently launched its bespoke rug design service Hart of the House. If youre decorating and have a particular pattern or colour in mind, or just cannot find what youre looking for, Hart of the House can bring your ideas to life by designing and crafting your perfect rug.

Youll spend time with a designer looking at patterns, objects and colours as well as anything else that inspires you before coming up with a fabulous one-off rug.

You could even, says Sara, bring in a piece of artwork your child has completed at school or a favourite picture to be reproduced in rug form.
