This thriving Suffolk village, near Sudbury, is known for its pretty high street with pastel-coloured cottages - we found out more about the Babergh village

1. Boxford is a village straddling the River Box.

2. At the time of Doomsday, Boxford had a population of just 18. At the last census that had increased to 1,221.

3. In the middle ages Boxford was a wealthy wool town, which is evident today in the heavily timbered properties that survive.

4. It’s a thriving village with a primary school, two pubs, village stores, church and lots of community activities and clubs.

5. One of Boxford’s most famous residents was George ‘Tornado’ Smith, who grew up at the White Hart pub and performed motocle stunts from the 1930s until the 1960s, including the Wall of Death, in which he rode the vertical wall on the inside of a huge drum. He had a tame pet lioness called Briton, which used to ride with him on the handlebars and is said to be buried in what is now the car park of the White Hart.

6. The annual Boxford Tornado cycle sportive, a British Cycling event, attracts hundreds of riders and this year will take place on April 10.
