Christmas in Suffolk: 9 festive afternoon teas

Christmas is a time to indulge and treat ourselves, what better way to do that than with a traditional festive afternoon tea? Suffolk is home to a myriad teashops and hotels serving delightful Christmassy teas

1. Nancy’s Vintage Teashop, Newmarket


Nancy’s Vintage Teashop oozes old world charm with a relaxing, tranquil atmosphere and first class service; it’s the perfect place to escape after a long morning of Christmas shopping. It’s one of Suffolk’s best known tea shops so you know you will be guaranteeed quality when bringing your guests along for a tiered festive afternoon tea that will be served throughout December.

2. The Hotel Victoria, Lowestoft

£13.95 (£17.95 for Prosecco or mulled cider)

Built in 1897 this majestic Victorian hotel sits on top of Kirkley Cliff and enjoys the stunning vistas of Lowestoft’s glorious blue-flag beaches. Guests can sit back and take in the beauty of these views as they enjoy a sumptuous turkey and cranberry finger sandwich, some pigs in blankets and mini macaroons to top it all off.

3. The Swan at Lavenham, Lavenham


Spend a peaceful afternoon in Lavenham catching up with friends over a decadent festive themed afternoon tea surrounded by the grandeur of the Swan’s Gallery Restaurant. Last year there was a pianist in attendance accompanied by carol singers to provide a wonderful Christmas atmosphere while the menu featured roasted maple Suffolk ham and egg-nog pannacotta. Expect one of Suffolk’s most iconic and long-running hotels to deliver a uniquely festive take on their wide range of afternoon teas that will satisfy any sort of taste you could think of.

4. White Lion Hotel, Aldeburgh


Pay a visit to the White Lion Hotel in Aldeburgh and indulge in their ‘Festivi-tea’ afternoon tea. Their in-house restaurant, Brasserie Bleue, have a different theme each month and for the Christmas period you can enjoy a delightful selection of tasty treats and nibbles including vol au vents, Christmas cakes and mince pies. All of this is served with your choice of fresh tea or coffee and a glass of Prosecco for an extra fee.

5. The Salthouse Harbour Hotel, Ipswich


This contemporary boutique hotel is situated on the heart of the spectacular Ipswich Waterfront making it the ideal sanctuary from the Christmas crowds during the festive period. Take your time to unwind over an indulgent afternoon tea with a tantalising mix of both sweet and savoury treats all washed down with your choice of traditional or fruit teas.

6. The Angel Hotel, Bury St Edmunds


A day spent in Bury St Edmunds means that taking afternoon tea at The Angel is a must. Sit back and relax with family and friends in the comfort of the contemporary Eaterie Restaurant or Lounge and immerse yourself in the festive cheery atmosphere. As one of the most stunning buildings in all of Bury St Edmunds - if not Suffolk - it’ll be a true Christmas treat to gather the family for this classically English tradition. Afternoon tea is available daily from 2:30 until 4:30 and is recommended that you book beforehand.

7. Arlingtons Brasserie, Ipswich


This trendy brasserie is nestled away in the awe-inspiring Grade II listed old Ipswich Museum building. At this time of the year the interior of this unique venue is decked out tastefully in festive decoration, creating a setting that is both charmingly historic and magnificently festive. The delightful afternoon tea is comprised of a selection of freshly made sandwiches served alongside a scone with jam and cream, a slice of homemade cake and an unlimited supply of your choice of tea or coffee. All of the food comes in gluten free options upon request.

8. Seckford Hall, Woodbridge


This luxury hotel in Woodbridge is steeped in history dating back over 500 years in the possession of the Seckford family. In keeping with its historic connections, afternoon tea at Seckford Hall is all about tradition - and what could be more traditional than a combination of afternoon tea, Christmas and Seckford Hall’s stunning red-brick style. Served from 3pm to 5:30pm guests can enjoy delicious scones with lashings of clotted cream and preserves, a selection of cakes and can choose from a wide selection of Brodies loose leaf teas.

9. Ufford Park, Woodbridge


This hotel, golf course and spa has an extensive Christmas programme for 2017, including a festive afternoon tea. Set in some of the most serene parts of the Suffolk countryside, you will be able to gaze at 120 acres of stunning parkland while you take an hour or two forgetting about the Christmas turkey.
