Celebrate Ipswich and the hugely popular Maritime Festival is set to be better than ever this year.
The town and waterfront will come alive between August 19 and 26 in a free week-long celebration of its rich and colourful history, as well as its vibrant cultural scene.
There will be events, activities and special offers for everyone to enjoy, with the focus of the celebration taking part over the bank holiday weekend August 23 – 26.
This year’s Maritime Festival ties in with the 200th anniversary of Rear Admiral Sir Philip Bowes Vere Broke’s victory in the War of 1812 against America. Broke, who was born just outside Ipswich and lived at Broke Hall, Nacton, commanded HMS Shannon, introducing training for his crew, especially gunnery, that led to a decisive victory over the Chesapeake off Boston, Massachusetts.
Broke was feted and presented with many honours, one of which was a cup presented to him by the Free and Easy Club of Ipswich. There is an informative display about Broke’s victory in the Ipswich Maritime trust window on the Waterfront – a must-see for all history lovers over the maritime weekend.
The festival also sees the return of the annual Ipswich Beer Festival, which will be in full flow from the Thursday afternoon until Monday. There will also be live music, food stalls, a craft market, historical re-enactments and much more, all adding to the excitement.
Paul Clement, chief executive of Ipswich Central, is encouraging everyone to join in what promises to be a big weekend in Ipswich.
