Trying to get some meat-free days into your diet? Here’s a quick selection of places in Suffolk where you can enjoy great vegan and vegetarian food

If you’re one of the many people who are trying to have at least one meat-free day during your busy week here are a five places in Suffolk where you can order fantastic vegetarian and/or vegan takeaway food, or treat yourself to dining out. All are Covid compliant and have gone to great lengths to make your breakfast, lunch or dinner experience as enjoyable and safe as possible, so you can just sit back and relax.

The Vegetarian Red Lion, Gt Bricett IP7 7DD

This family run business in Gt Bricett serves only vegetarian and vegan dishes. Tempting starters include Stuffed Camembert baked with garlic cloves and rosemary, a Mezze Platter of rich sundried tomato hummus, tabbouleh, feta cheese and olive mix, tempura of mixed Mediterranean and root vegetables served with wasabi mayonnaise dipping sauce, Tunisian Filo Parcels, Curry Balls and Tikka Sauce. Follow up with mains such as Mushroom Wellington, Beer Battered Halloumi, Toasted Burrito on Garlic Rice, Bombay Burrito, Almond Caponata Stew, Plant Based Burger, or The Red Lion Pasty with smoky sweet potato, mixed beans and sausage puff pastry pasty, served with chunky chips and rainbow salad.

There’s also a children’s menu and takeaway frozen meals startung at just £3.95. They include Keema Curry, Cajun and Smoked Sausage Pasta Bake, Red Lentil and Sun Blushed Tomato Lasagne, Mediterranean Style Pancakes, Tagine, 3 Bean Chilli, and Green Thai Curry. They can all be cooked straight from frozen in the microwave making them perfect for easy midweek,meat-free suppers.

Cradle, Sudbury CO10 1RD

Cradle is a fully licensed, plant-based bakery and restaurant and is currently running a takeaway lunch service from Thursday to Sunday

9am to 2pm. The menu changes weekly depending on what fresh produce is available – currently the weekly menu is released on Wednesdays via Instagram and Facebook and orders taken by text message to 07415061461.

Expect lunch dishes such as celeriac and roasted cashew nut soup, a tartine of lemony Capel mushroom carpaccio, sesame dressed Savoy cabbage and roasted sunflower seed and garlic cream on toasted sourdough with fermented cashew brie, and hazelnut and chocolate ganache tart with a rum and raisin ice-cream.

The Walnut Tree, Thwaite IP23 7ED

The team that established the veggie Red Lion at Gt Bricett moved to their own premises at the former Bucks Head in Thwaite 2017. Open Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 3.30pm and 5:30pm to 10pm, Sunday 12pm to 4.30pm. The menu includes starters such as chickpea and apricot tagine, vegetable gyozas, spiced mushroom and lentil soft taco, as well as a sharing starters such as baked camembert, nachos, and Indian thali. The choice of delicious main courses includes roasted mushroom wellington, sweet potato and roasted red pepper burrito, squash, cauliflower and almond pasanda, mushroom and walnut polpette, roasted squash and oyster mushroom pie, and the Walnut Tree Budda bowl – crispy smoked tofu, hummus, avocado, beetroot and olives, with fried beetroot and chia seed flatbread and Asian sesame slaw. There are tempting desserts and a children’s menu. The Walnut Tree is also offering some of its favourite dishes and gourmet pizzas to takeaway and enjoy at home. A family run business that started as an online delivery enterprise, adding a deli, shop and now a pub and restaurant. Expect vegan versions of hearty pub food favourites – starters such as Hank’s Canadian style seitan wings, stuffed Portobello, loaded nachos, and a big antipasti board, followed by vegan mains including fish ‘n’chips (made from banana blossom), pasta and gnocchi dishes, burgers and jambalaya, and a full menu of irresistible desserts from crumble, to brownies, chocolate tart and apple cake. The Greenhouse Cafe, Felixstowe IP11 7HE

Tucked away in the heart of Fleixtowe’s town centre, The Greenhouse Cafe offers something for everyone with its take on home cooked classics and dairy free baking. The cafe is now open for sit-ins as well as collections and takeaways Tuesday to Thursdays from 10.3am to 2pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. You can email to reserve a 45-minute slot. The newly released autumn menu includes the Greenhouse Hash of pulled jackfruuit, shredded white cabbage, crispy potatoes, kale and red onion, a vegan tofu version of eggs Benedict called tofeggs Ally (after chef Alice), a brekky stack of nossage, porridge and pancakes with wicked toppings such as Portobello mushroom, tomato and a brioche bun, chuna mayo melt (chickpeas), TLT (tofu bacon) sandwich, celami (celeriac ‘celami’) reuben sandwich and a tofish (tifu) finger sarnie.
