Ixworths role in a new breed of chicken

During the 1930s, in the village of Ixworth, Reginald Appleyard began developing a new breed of chicken. He set out to produce a quick maturing table bird that would also give reasonable egg production. In his search for the new breed he used the White Sussex, Indian Game, White Old English Game, White Minorca and White Orpington and finally, in 1939, the Ixworth chicken bred true, or pure, and the breed was a reality. He named it after his home village.
