The town’s community is coming together to retell the Easter story through participation theatre

The Woodbridge Passion Play first took place in 2007, the idea of local primary school headteacher, Lyn Spall and has been staged every four years, each time with a slightly different approach and cast.

This year, 18-year-old Jack Davies will play Jesus in an adaptation of the Bible story written by former teacher and lay reader Gay Nicholls, using a combination of modern and traditional costume.

It takes place on Good Friday, April 3, at 10.30am at Elmhurst Park, Woodbridge. Members of all the churches in Woodbridge participate through acting, singing, playing in the orchestra, helping with costumes, scenery, staging or technical expertise.

The audience is encouraged to take part, responding as ‘the crowd’ and joining in hymns and songs. Around a thousand people attended the 2011 production. Christine Nunn, assistant priest at All Saints Kesgrave, is directing the play and Mike Cooper is the choir leader.

“If you have never heard the story of Easter, then this is the time to come and find out,” says Lyn. “Or if you know the story from the Bible and want to see it brought to life, and to join in and be a part of it, then come along.

“It would be lovely if it would encourage people to think what Easter is really about and make it more special for them.”

The Woodbridge Passion Play takes part in Elmhurst Park, Woodbridge from 10.30am to noon on Friday, April 3, 2015. Entry is free but please bring your own chair.
