Rafis Spicebox at 77 North Street, Sudbury has become something of an institution for curry lovers in south Suffolk and north Essex. This Asian deli specialises in preparing unique curry packs which were invented by Spicebox founder and cookery author Rafi Fernandez. The idea is simple no chopping, no oil and you can create an authentic curry in about half an hour.

Several pubs in the county have turned their hands to producing curries in recent years but one in the east of the county can lay claim to being the best. The Swan Indian at The Swan Inn at Alderton, near Ipswich, won the title of Indian Food Pub of the Year in 2010 as well as naother award for quality food. Owners Peter and Patricia Saxon are refurbishing the pub and say their mix of live music and Indian food seems to be goign down well.

It was one of the first gastropubs in the region, now the flint-built Beehive at Horringer, near Bury St Edmunds, is a offering reasonably priced and, according to one reader, fine quality Thai food. The pubs Thai chefs have worked all over the world and now cook an authentic 50 dish Thai and Oriental dishes.

Looking for the best ingredients for that spicy meal? Global Fruits in Ipswichs Buttermarket is just the place for a variety of world and local fruit and vegetables. Good for fresh herbs too.

Our food writer Ruth French nominates A Passage To India in Fore Street, Ipswich as her favourite curry restaurant. Its for two reasons. Firstly, they offer a far more extensive Eastern menu than many curry houses and feature an English menu as well (for awkward, palate-retarded friends!) Secondly, their customer care is second to none and their friendly and courteous manner wins over more grand and salubrious surroundings. But really its all about the food for me every time!
We also like the Memsaab restaurant in Lavenham, the Maharani and Zaika in Ipswich, the Ballingdon Valley Tandoori in Sudbury and upmarket Valley Connection in Churchgate Street, Bury St Edmunds.
