Shaun and Fiona Colby brought The Buxhall Crown in 2012 and since then have continued and improved its excellent reputation for food. With homemade, seasonal food customers are always guaranteed something fresh and delicious.
They along with their chef Craig make almost everything themselves, from bread to ice cream. They also use seasonal produce which is as locally sourced as possible. “Our menus change as the seasons change, we update them regularly. We use food only when it’s in season,” said Shaun. This guarantees that you get vegetables and fruit that are fresh and locally grown, not canned or frozen.
The menu at The Buxhall Crown is “British but modern,” as Shaun describes it. With dishes like farmhouse pork sausages served with parsnip and apple mash, red onion jus and shallot and parsnip crisps, there are traditional British treats that are tasty and filling. They also serve more unusual dishes, such as seared king scallops served with a Parmesan flan, crayfish and white wine volute and topped with caviar. The Crown also has a classic Sunday roast menu as well as light lunches and delicious desserts, including Rosemary infused Panna Cotta & rhubarb jelly with rhubarb coulis and shortbread crumb and crown recipe brioche bread and butter pudding served with pouring cream if this doesn’t take your fancy why not try one of Craig’s secret recipe handmade ice-cream with flavours ranging from honey comb to stem ginger.
Combining this delicious food with the setting of The Buxhall Crown provides a perfect pairing. Situated just outside Stowmarket it’s settled in the scenic countryside. “We’re in a beautiful remote setting and the outlook is amazing,” said Shaun.
The restaurant’s garden is the perfect place to enjoy these views as well as the lovely food or a pint of local beer or choose from our 35 wines 15 available by the glass. It has a patio seating area as well as secluded bays for a private and relaxing feel.
If the weather is a little cold then the interior of the pub is welcoming too. The building is full of atmosphere with a Georgian bar area with views to the windmill outside, as well as the 17th century bar with low ceiling higgledy-piggledy beams and an inglenook fireplace.
While the restaurant is busy, customers are never crowded in or rushed through a meal. Shaun explained: “We don’t cram people in and we don’t double sit, so if you book a table for 6.30pm you’ll have it for the whole night.” This attitude, rare in an eatery these days, shows that Shaun and the staff care about their customers’ experience and not just about how many people they can get through the door.
With personal touches like this, combined with high-quality food and a beautiful setting, it’s easy to see why The Buxhall Crown is a must-visit food venue for Suffolk.
